BSP supremo Mayawati on Sunday urged voters in Rae Bareli and Amethi to vote for Congress and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of following a ‘divide and rule’ policy to create a rift in the BSP-SP-RLD mahagathbandhan or grand alliance in the state.
According to timesnow, The BSP chief, said that “people of the country know that we did not align with Congress in UP because both BJP and Congress are the different sides of the same coin”. She said that her decision to support Congress in its two strongholds was taken only to allow room for the latter’s top leaders to take BJP on in other parts of the country.
“Mahagathbandhan’s votes will go to Congress in these two seats and I request the BSP supporters to do the same,” she said.
The BSP chief’s announcement comes just a day ahead of polling in both of the Congress pocket boroughs, making the timing of her statement crucial. Congress president Rahul Gandhi is pitted against Union Minister and BJP candidate Smriti Irani. In Rae Bareli, it is Sonia Gandhi against Congress turncoat and BJP candidate Dines Pratap Singh.
Mayawati also attacked PM Modi stating he is trying to drive a wedge between the alliance partners in UP in order to save its face in the next three phases of Lok Sabha elections. She said Modi in-line with his “photo dalo, raaj karo strategy” made several false statements in Pratapgarh rally on Saturday.
Mayawati said people’s support for the mahagathbandhan has riled the BJP. She said the alliance will not only produce a new Prime Minister at the Centre but also a new government in UP.
