A 16-year-old Rishi Rane studying in DY Patil International School, Worli, Mumbai have invented an app ‘Garbo- Dustbin Finder’ which will help the one to locate nearest dustbins in Mumbai.
“I was out with friends and we wanted to discard a few food packets. We walked almost for 15 minutes but couldn’t find a bin. That’s when I realised that bins are mostly located in prime areas and even if the bins are there in small congested lanes, one cannot see them.” Rishi said in an interview to NDTV
Rishi, the inventor of the app went to several parts of the city and tried to find out the situations of the bins and their locations and after completing the survey he studied on various aspects of locations of bins.
After getting the complete information it took three weeks for him to complete the design of the app and the app was finally launched on 22nd June.
Around 100 bins across the city are now marked on the app. Friends and family from different regions of the city downloaded the app, clicked pictures of the bins nearby and marked the locations and forwarded it to Rishi. Any new locations were mailed to him he started approving the locations of the bin and pinning them on the Google Maps.
Let’s have a look at the features of the app.
- On opening the app, a user has to simply click on ‘Find The Nearest Bin’
- Bins located within the radius of 1 kilometre will pop up on the app.
- If there are no bins within the radius of 1 kilometre, the app will further give an option to the user to continue navigating and go beyond a kilometre.
- The app also includes ‘Add A New Bin’ option for people to add a public dustbin which isn’t there on the app. All one has to do is click a picture and press the send button. Once the developer approves, the bin will be added on the map.
Now Mumbaikars have an app where they can locate bins and dump their garbages instead of littering in the city. The app is quite useful in the prime locations, where one cannot find the bins he litters garbages there itself. The noble initiative by a teenager is applauded at every level. For further assistance, Rishi is going to approach BMC.
“The BMC will certainly have all the information regarding public bins places across the city. With a help from them, I aim to increase the existing number of bins on the app,” said Rishi
