The numbers shown by the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) in terms of tree plantation in the last 2 years, reveals irregularities in the campaign.
In the year 2011, the census was conducted for the number of plants existing in Thane. Accordingly, the census counted a total of 4 lakh 55 thousand trees. But now the corporation claims that it has planted 6 lakh trees in the last 3 years.
Under the state governments ambitious campaign of planting trees every rainy season, TMC carries out the drive of planting trees. During the month of June and July, trees are being planted by the authority, which means the corporation has planted 6 lakh trees in 6 months, in the last 3 years.
Is it possible to plant 6 lakh trees in 6 months? On an average did the corporation planted 3,333 trees in a day? If we believe the answer is yes, what about the conservation of the trees?
Usually, the forest department spends Rs. 150- 200 for conserving a tree for 5 years, but TMC spends Rs.1,800 for conserving the planted tree. Isn’t this a kind of looting of the money paid by the taxpayers?
TMC has bought soil worth 47 crores for planting trees in the city. One would wonder, 47 crores of corporation funds for soil. TMC has installed JIO tagging system to calculate the number of trees in particular area, but due to more number of trees planted in the available space, the system does not show up the exact number of trees, which raises the question on the actual number of trees planted.
On the other hand, TMC is taking additional axes from Thanekars and it is blindly using the money in such a manner for planting trees.
What is the use of planting trees in such a manner? Is it worthful planting so many trees, if it is not conserved properly? Is there a need for spending so much of funds on tree plantation? Is this a sign of any kind of irregularity? Total expenditure seems to be too high than the actual cost. Is the corporation following the basic rules, which is to be followed before tree plantation?
It is also blamed that the civic body is making wrong use of its power and many decisions are done without the consent of elected representatives.
