One of the busiest railway stations, Thane railway station will be redeveloped and upgraded very soon, Commercial complexes will be constructed on the railway station same as the Vashi Railway station.
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the redevelopment of the A1 and A2 category railway stations in the country by providing lease rent to private developers for 99 years.
Accordingly, Thane Railway Station will be redeveloped and a commercial complex will be built o the railway station. Thane Municipal Corporation has already approved the proposal and the proposal has been sent to the state government for further approval.
In June 2015, the Union Cabinet had decided to redevelop the A1 and A class stations across the country through private developers.
Firstly it was decided to provide the stations on a lease of 45 years. Thane, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus on Bandra Terminus, Mumbai Central, Borivali and Central Railway on Western Railway were included in this redevelopment.
Finally, the Cabinet gave approval for granting the stations on a lease of 99 years. Therefore, the redevelopment of five stations on the Central and Western Railway will now attain pace.
Rail Vikas Corporation has already given the proposal to Mumbai and Thane Municipal Corporation to sanction an extended area for building commercial complexes at three stations at Bhandup, Nahur and Thane on the Central Railway line.
Thane Municipal Corporation has cleared that instead of granting the rights, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has offered to purchase the rights of the commercial complex. The engineering department has sent a proposal to the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation that it will pay a premium of Rs. 28 crores and every year the payment of Rs. 3 crores will be done to the Railway Administration.
Considering the huge problem of traffic jams in the vicinity of Thane railway station, engineers have started a survey of possibilities in building the commercial complex on the railway station.
Thane Municipal Corporation has already given a proposal to Railway Corporation for establishing a commercial hub on the available space and for the construction of parking area, food courts.
