WhatsApp- a social media company have capped the number of messaging forward limits to 5 per user. In India, WhatsApp is trying a limit of five chats, as against 20 for the rest of the world.
The Indian users won’t be able to forward any message to more than 5 contacts at a time. This effort by the Whatsapp is based on the recent mob lynching cases in the country.
Apart from the message forward limit, WhatsApp has also launched educational videos in India asking users to “double check” facts before sharing messages received as forwards.
The videos, in Hindi and English, will be available on Facebook – the parent company of WhatsApp as the messaging platform looks to combat spread of rumours that have led to many mob lynching cases in India.
India is the country with the most numbers of WhatsApp users. Around 20 crores users are daily engaged on WhatsApp in India. Putting a limitations on the messages being forwarded via WhatsApp is an first effort to curb the circulation of fake news in India.
