Commuters on Central Railway has to face trouble reaching their offices as the trains on the Central Line are running 15 to 20 minutes late. According to reports, some trains even got cancelled on the Central Line. According to DNA, the motormen yesterday (August 9) had threatened to not work overtime, which could result in nearly 250 services either getting delayed or cancelled throughout the day.
On an average, 4,200 commuters travel in each service operated during peak hours, and around 2,500 commuters use them during the rest of the time. If services start getting delayed or cancelled, then it will put tremendous pressure on the system and result in overcrowding. There are two huge notice boards put up by the railway unions right outside the motormen and guards lobby in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Railway Motormen Demand
- To fill up 229 vacant posts
- ‘Removal from Service’ for Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD) cases, action should be stopped.
Out of 880 motormen post, 229 posts are vacant. for the smooth running of the railways, motor operators require to do overtime. If Motermen decide to cancel the overtime, more than 150 trains of the Central Railway will be cancelled.
A motorman who is part of Joint Action Forum told DNA, “We are working overtime in order to compensate for the vacant 229 posts. But now that the administration is dilly-dallying our demand of eliminating the punishment for SPAD cases, we have decided to indefinitely not work overtime.”
To resolve the issue, the Railway Administration and the Motorman Union have been convened at 12 AM at CSMT at noon. Motorman’s non-cooperation movement has supported many organizations. This is likely to have resulted in the cancellation of 150 local trains.
The motor vehicle representative has alleged that the administration is ignoring the demands made by the Central Railway from time to time. The Central Railway Motorman has started the ‘Ekla Chalo Re-movement‘, for a major demand of immediate withdrawal of action on 26 motor vehicles. If this movement continues, around 600 local trains mainly, harbour trans-harbour will hit.
