Experienced data analyst Praveen Chakravarty to head the department; Congress is the only party to have a data analytics wing. The grand old party of Indian politics is catching up with the future.
In what is thought to be a first for a political party in the country, the Congress has set up a data analytics department to gauge the popularity of its leaders and the party, an exercise aimed at revamping the party ahead of the 2019 general election.
But why everyone is going for Big Data? What is this big data ?
Big data is data sets that are so voluminous and complex that traditional data-processing application software is inadequate to deal with them. Big data challenges include capturing data, data storage, data analysis, search, sharing, transfer, visualization, querying, updating, information privacy and data source. There are a number of concepts associated with big data: originally there were 3 concepts volume, variety, velocity. Other concepts later attributed with big data are veracity (i.e., how much noise is in the data) and value.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi has appointed Praveen Chakravarty, an experienced data analyst and senior fellow at IDFC Institute, Mumbai, as chairman of the newly-created department.

“My expertise is analysing data and here in the party I shall be doing the same,” Praveen Chakravarty told ThePrint.
“Data analysis would help us know our workers and voters better besides the issues which can make an impact on the ground,” Chakravarty, who will lead a team of data experts, added.
