The much talked controversial Aadhaar software is again turning its head up as experts have confirmed that UIDAI’s Aadhaar software can be hacked through a software patch that interrupts the critical security feature of the Aadhaar software.
The Aadhaar identity database which consists of biometrics and information from most of the population of the country can be played in a false manner with the help of a software.
According to the investigation carried on by experts, a patch of software can disable the security features of the UIDAI’s software which is used for enrollment of new Aadhaar users.
The patch is freely available for Rs 2,500 which can allow unauthorised persons, based anywhere in the world, to generate Aadhaar numbers and the software is still widely used by many.
The software patch is a bundle of code used to alter the functionality of a software programme. Usually, such patches are used for minor updates in the existing programme but they can also interrupt the security features as it has worked out in the Aadhaar database case.
How exactly the patch of software works?
- Once the patch is installed, enrolment operators no longer need to provide their fingerprint to use the enrolment software.
- The GPS is disabled.
- The sensitivity of the iris scanner is reduced.
This means that a single operator can log into multiple machines at the same time.
How can the use of patch affect the Aadhaar database?
- A single person can create Multiple Aadhaar cards.
- One can create the card from any part of the world.
- No need for verified documents for creating a new one.
- No need for personalised availability to create a new Aadhaar card.
The database of the entire country is opened up through a patch of software is an awakening alarm for the government to act before its too late as directly the information of 1 billion Indians is under threat. The government should look after the security feature of UIDAI and check out the errors occurred during circulation of the software to the recognised agencies.
It must put in efforts to erase the false data stored using the software patch. The cyber team should put in all the efforts to find out the culprits who are involved in such vulnerable act. The government should lawfully act against the culprit who has set the nation’s security under threat. UIDAI- software should be re-designed so that henceforth such actions cannot interfere with the software and the security is retained.
