According to the report
, prepared by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide on the Global Hunger Index, India has been ranked at the 103rd position out of the 119 countries.
The shocking part of the report is that India is one of the 45 countries which are included in serious levels of hunger. This is a serious issue that the Indian government should watch out for, being a developing nation, the country is lacking in providing people with basic amenities.
India stood at the 100th position last year (GHI score 31.4) and has fallen three places this year with the 103rd rank (GHI score 31.1).
The parameters on which countries are listed in GHI:
What is Undernourishment?
Undernourishment is a condition where one has nothing to eat due to poverty, financial conditions or climatic situations.
What is Child Mortality?
Child mortality is typically defined as the number of deaths of children under five years of age in a given year per one thousand children in this age group.
What is Child Wasting?
Child Wasting is also termed as “low weight for height”, among children under five. It is usually the result of acute significant food shortage and/or disease.
What is Child Stunting?
Child Stunting is the impaired growth and development that children experience due to poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial conditions
About 151 million children are stunted and 51 million children are wasted across the globe according to the Global Hunger Index. India is ranked below many neighbouring countries, including China (25th spot), Nepal (72), Myanmar (68), Sri Lanka (67) and Bangladesh (86). Pakistan is placed at the 106th position.
The Global Hunger Index report further revealed that the world has made gradual, long-term progress in reducing overall hunger, but this progress has been “uneven”.
Since last 5 years, Child mortality has increased in India due to various factors. The ruling government is seen promising in developmental works but on the other hand, hunger being the reason for death is quite disastrous. Yes !! improving the lifestyle of the people is a good idea but focusing on the lower section of the society where people can’t even afford basic amenities is too quite important.
India, a country which is visualized as one of the superpowers of the world, but hunger death is a shocking and serious matter of concern. Many incidents have been reported about malnutrition
, starvation death, child mortality in the remote areas of the country. This problem must be initiated on a prior basis so that we can eradicate hunger death once for all.
