A 31-year-old woman constable with the Navi Mumbai police filed a case of sexual assault against a sub-inspector attached to the Crime Branch on Saturday. While no arrests have been made, senior inspector of the women’s cell has been asked to investigate the case.
The accused, identified as Amit Shelar, is currently with the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch. He was earlier posted at the same police station where the victim was working. Initial probe has revealed that they were batchmates.
“According to the complainant, in 2017 the accused allegedly fed her some substance, following which she fell unconscious. After that, she was physically assaulted, which was recorded by the accused,” said a senior officer requesting anonymity.
The complainant claimed that Shelar blackmailed her and repeatedly assaulted her between 2017 and November 2018, after which the woman approached the Crime Branch seniors.
“We immediately asked the women’s cell to take necessary action and an FIR was filed,” a senior Crime Branch officer said. We are taking the case seriously and necessary actions will be taken,” added the official.
“We are currently investigating the case. The accused has not been arrested yet,” said an officer privy to the investigation.
