Leads for the ongoing counting process gave a crucial verdict in the electoral battle between the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the Congress-Telugu Desam Party(TDP) alliance in Telangana, the youngest state in the country, today. Mid-way through counting, trends for the 119-member assembly gave Chief MInister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s TRS close to 80 seats and the Congress-led front a little over 20. A poll of exit polls for the 119-member assembly with a majority mark at 60, had predicted a second term for TRS with a healthy majority of 63 seats. Trends went on to prove that KCR’s call for early dissolution of the Telangana assembly paid off. During campaigning, KCR had said that his party would win with “bumper majority”. The exit polls also predicted that the TDP-Congress alliance, which claimed to have a “good chemisty”, would fall far behind the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Leads through the day echoed the poll of polls prediction, giving TRS a clear majority with over 80 seats. KCR’s daughter K Kavitha, a parliamentarian, said his hard work had paid off. “We are seeing the response of the people. The hard work in four and a half years has paid off,” said Ms Kavitha. “Nobody knows Telangana like KCR,” she remarked.
The Congress, which for the first time tied up with long-time rival Chandrababu Naidu, will get only 39 of the state’s 119 seats, way below the majority mark of 60, the poll of exit polls predicted. Others which is expected to include Asaduddin Owaisi’s party — AIMIM, will get 8 seats, an aggregate of exit polls predicted. The assembly election in Telangana was to be held in the middle of 2019, but KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, dissolved the state assembly prematurely, pushing forward the election to the end of the year. The counting was preceded by high drama In the state. Yesterday, despite the exit poll predictions, the Congress and Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party had met Governor EL Narasimhan and requested that in case of a split verdict, they be given the first chance to form government.
