As a part of the Smart City project, Thane will be developing the 32 km coastline stretches from Diva to Gaimukh. The Thane Municipal Corporation has proposed this plan in 2010 but it was approved in 2017.
The development and beautification of Parsik-Retibunder, Kolshet, Kavesar-Waghbil, Kalwa- Shastrinagar, Saket-Balkum, Naglabunder, and Kopri will be carried out through Smart City Limited and the beautification of Gaimukh coastal areas will be done by Maharashtra Maritime Board. TMC is expecting Parsik – Retibunder Chowpatty project to be completed by this December and would be made open for the public.
The waterfront project began in Thane with the commissioner’s plan to develop Parsik-Retibunder creek into a Chowpatty like the Marina Bay at Singapore and the Sabarmati riverfront in Ahmedabad. A total of 10.58 km will be developed under the waterfront development project of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC). The TMC will fund the entire project cost of Rs. 260.3 crore. “The corporation appointed Ney-Poullissen Engineers and Architects, a Belgium-based consultancy firm to carry out research on the waterfront Chowpatty plans and a master plan is ready for the project “officials said. TMC Commissioner had claimed that Thane is the first city in Maharashtra to start with waterfront development projects.
There are some concerns raised by various environmentalists, “The coast is being leveled for this project by cutting the mangroves so in future there will be a high risk of floodwaters entering the city”,
The creek is heavily guarded by the mangroves, so many of the mangrove lovers have raised a voice against the plan. The corporation assured that there would be no loss of mangroves while completing the project and the mangroves cut will be replanted soon. The entire waterfront beautification project will be worked out following the Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) norms.
The project aims at conservation, protection, and beautification of the polluted and neglected creek which is degraded by the illegal sand mining mafias.
